Technology for the next Generation

With the "Technology for the next Generation" award, we want to support young researchers and start-ups who are working to improve the future for the next generation.

Research issues often include a technological/IT component. In addition to financial support, this is where our expertise comes in. This is why we are particularly keen to support researchers and start-ups in this area.

Until 2023, the TNFG was focussed on areas directly related to the health of the next generation. Since 2024, we have opened the award to all projects that directly or indirectly contribute to a better future for the next generation. This includes, for example, projects in the fields of environment, sustainability and business.

Additional Support for Start-ups

Especially during the early stages of a start-up, reliable and easy-to-manage IT infrastructure and the protection of sensitive data are essential. That is why we would like to provide participating start-ups with additional support:
Start-ups receive 12 months of free access to pulse, our client management, monitoring and protection solution for IT devices used by SMEs.
With pulse, devices can be managed centrally, security functions can be monitored, and recurring IT tasks can be automated. A particularly useful feature is the integrated remote support functionality, which allows devices to be accessed and supported quickly and easily whenever needed.
This gives start-ups more time to focus on their ideas and further development.

1.Preis

Stavros Antonopoulos und Vassilis Poulopoulos (VaccineHero) erhalten den Preis 2025 für ihre innovative Entwicklung: Mithilfe von Virtual-Reality-Technologie wird der Impfprozess für Kinder deutlich stressfreier gestaltet.

Die Kinder werden mit einer VR-Brille aktiv in eine Geschichte eingebunden. Sie übernehmen darin eine Aufgabe und werden spielerisch darauf vorbereitet, dass sie während der Handlung berührt und auch "gepickt" werden. Genau dieser gezielte Einbau des realen Geschehens in die virtuelle Geschichte macht den entscheidenden Unterschied – und ermöglicht eine entspannte, angstfreie Impferfahrung.

2. Preis

Esther Spinatsch und Samuel Allemann (pharMe) erhalten den 2. Preis 2025 für ihre digitale Lösung zur Stärkung der Apotheken als wohnortnahe Grundversorger.

Angesichts überlasteter Arztpraxen und Kliniken bietet die App pharMe eine gezielte Unterstützung für Apotheken. Sie vereinfacht Beratung, Kommunikation und Abläufe – und hilft so, Patientinnen und Patienten schneller und effizienter zu versorgen.

3. Preis

Ariel Wesolowski und Flavio Clésio (Anomaly Tracker) erhalten den 3. Preis 2025 für ihre KI-basierte Lösung zur automatisierten Anomalieerkennung und Prognose.

Mit Anomaly Tracker wird Datenüberwachung so einfach und zugänglich wie nie zuvor. Die Plattform erkennt automatisch Auffälligkeiten – ob bei industriellen Sensordaten oder geschäftlichen Kennzahlen – und unterstützt Unternehmen jeder Größe dabei, Probleme frühzeitig zu erkennen und fundierte Entscheidungen zu treffen.

Winner 2024

Alexander Heynisch is the winner of the 2024 award for his pioneering research on fighting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through de novo protein design. AMR arises when microbes, such as bacteria, evolve and consequently fail to respond to previously effective drugs. Using Nobel Prize-winning protein design technology, Alexander develops molecules that kill bacteria through mechanisms different from traditional antibiotics. His work advances the understanding of bacterial vulnerabilities and could contribute to the development of the next generation of antibiotics to tackle this looming global health crisis.

Winner 2023

Elena Börlin and her team at SeFit were the winners in 2023. SeFit aims to make Virtual Reality more accessible for therapists, thereby simplifying exposure therapy. Exposure therapy can be used for various purposes, such as treating anxiety disorders. The goal is now to combine VR headsets with real-life recorded scenes, an app, and a web application, along with digital biomarkers, to assist people suffering from sensory filter deficits. Sensory filter deficit is particularly known in the context of ADHD, Asperger's, and migraines, but there are other diagnoses that are also affected.

Winner 2022

The 2022 winners are Aukera Therapeutics with "Unleashing the therapeutic potential of mTOR inhibition". Cell growth and proliferation (increase in cell number) in the human body are controlled by the protein mTOR. mTOR works in two different forms: mTOR complex 1 and mTOR complex 2. Cancer cells are generally characterized by increased cell growth and proliferation, and approximately 70 % of all cancers show increased mTOR complex 1 activity. In addition, certain neurological disorders show upregulation of mTOR complex 1 signaling. Aukera Therapeutics is developing a unique class of drugs that can selectively and safely reduce the activity of mTOR complex 1.

This year we also gave Round Table Antibiotics an honorary award in recognition of their social commitment.

Winner 2020

This year's winner is Daniel Hauke with his research on paranoid schizophrenia. We are proud to support Daniel in this area by developing an app for early diagnosis and faster medication discovery.

Schizophrenia is a serious psychiatric illness that affects millions of people worldwide (World Health Organization). Persecution thoughts are a particularly common symptom that occurs in around 70% of all first-time patients (Freeman & Garety, 2014) and is a particularly stressful symptom for those affected. At present, however, the treatment of such symptoms is tedious and it can take several months to find the right medicament, as there are no valid predictors for the success of various drugs. The goal of our research is to develop computer-aided tests for clinicians that help predict the success of medication or potential side effects, in order to significantly shorten the time it takes to find an effective medication for a patient and to adapt the medical treatment to the individual patient. We are also testing whether these computer-assisted tests can be used beforehand to predict whether patients who are at increased risk of schizophrenia will actually get it.
